Read full description of the books:
999 Tadpoles is a story about a mother and a father frog that give birth to 999 young tadpoles. When the tadpoles eventually grow into frogs their home in their small pond is no longer big enough to hold all of them and they are forced to leave to find another pond. They all line up to trek across the endless stretch of grass with the young tadpoles complaining the whole time. The father warns them that they must stay together to avoid dangers such as snakes. The tadpoles then notice a snake sitting next to them asleep and they are all so scared that they run for their lives. While they are running a hawk swoops down and grabs the father frog. The other frogs will not allow the hawk to get away so they all join hands in a chain and grab onto their fathers legs. The hawk then takes all the frogs high up in the sky where they fly over the clouds. Eventually, the hawk cannot bear their weight anymore and drops them and they all fall into a bigger pond, which they make their new home.
This story uses its simplistic painted pictures to depict the story. Although they are not entirely necessary to the story they help to display images that would be hard to imagine on their own and also give life and excitement to each page. The pictures are not overly detailed and at times only display the characters without any background detail. This can help the reader to focus in on the story and notice the progression from scene to scene. The pictures also display the scenes from many different perspectives such as that of the hawk before it swoops giving the book more variety and allowing the reader to view it from multiple viewpoints.
There is not a definite theme presented in this story making its primary purpose for enjoyment. Although there are dangerous situations presented from page to page the tone and mood consistently remain light hearted and silly. This book would be a great one to read aloud because of all of the voices of the different little frogs and the onomatopoeia used such as when the frogs are dropped into the water. This book does not inspire any critical thinking or reasoning but rather provides the reader with a fun reading experience that is easy to engage with.
