Q: What do you get when you combine a weighty, alien metal ball, parallel universes, e = mc2, a seashell and a love story?
A: Crossing in Time
"...one change - twenty years in the past - that could turn out to save the world."
"I'm sorry, Diego, but we're just not meant to be - not in this universe anyway...."
After fifteen years apart, Diego and Isabel meet randomly one day on a street in downtown Denver. Previous lovers they parted not so amicably. When the building they're in collapses and they're both injured, their relationship reignites.
Narrated in first person from three points-of-view, Diego, Isabel and Matt Hudson, British physics professor and an expert in materials science and black holes. There are also multiple timelines. If I had one real complaint it's that the timelines are not always clear. (Putting a date with the chapter headings would have helped.)
Plus, certain situations are obscure and you don't get what's really happening until you read further down the track and something is said, and the lightbulb comes on. At first I thought it was going to be all schmaltzy romance. Diego does come on to Isabel really quickly, when they'd not seen each other in fifteen years! (Must be all that Latin blood.) The actual mechanics of the time-travel are not fully explained, but somehow I think most readers will be more immersed in the story and the lives of Diego and Isabel anyway. But these are minor hiccups.
There is a healthy dose of sex scenes (which seemed to bother a lot of other reviewers) but nothing new here for regular readers of romance. (I think this should have been marketed more to the romance community as the focus of the story is Diego and Isabel's relationship.)
Can Diego and Isabel (and Matt) prevent a looming apocalypse? Well, I don't know, cos it ends on a cliffie! Intriguing but incomplete, some readers will be put off because it ends on a cliffhanger. This is the first in a series of five books.
This is not a lightweight sci-fi romance. There are some graphic details but for anyone who has read R Lee Smith, this will be a walk-in-the-park. There are a few things I would tweak, but overall I'm impressed. With plenty of humour and smart dialogue, deep characterisations, an original, well-thought-out plot, Crossing in Time has hooked me in.
Though this didn't quite reach 4.5 stars for me, I will definitely be lining up for the next instalment. A combo of time-travel, sci-fi, apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic, action, adventure, thriller and romance. With a touch of The Butterfly Effect, Crossing in Time is a thought-provoking sci-fi. Just remember though, the Romance is strong with this one.
