More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/Amelia Cole and the Enemy Unleashed feels very much like a middle issue - happening in the middle of the story and not really having an ending, beginning, or much needed small story arc. At 100 pages, I would have liked to see at least 1-2 more issues more included in order to create something closer to a story arc. This is still a great series but admittedly I feel a lot less of the magic here than I did when it started with Volume 1.
Story: Amelia is in the other world coping as Protector while the Omega company is underground and desperately fighting for survival. The magistrate may be a fake, creatures are sucking the magic from everything, and Amelia's own freaky magic strength may not be enough to fight the power behind the 'big evil' - the Council themselves.
Most of the first half of the book is filler leading to a big battle for the second half. The real hero of the story wasn't Amelia herself so much as her golem. This was really more about his story and usefulness with a bunch of character thrown in for him to save.
Amelia is as quippy as ever but she seems to escape a bit too easily all the time and I'm having a hard time appreciating any danger. As well, since she never seems too worried, it is easy to shrug off the plot points as, "eh, she'll wave her wrench." That laissez faire attitude is disengaging me from the story.
I have to admit that the side characters haven't been as interesting as Amelia. There are quite a lot of them but their time on the panels feels more like an opportunity to gloss over than to read. Only the golem (ironically) has much of a personality.
Amelia Cole is still a very interesting and distinct series. I'll hang around a bit longer to see where the authors take her.
