Read full description of the books:

This may be hard to believe for comicbook readers who started reading comics after the relaunch but, back in early 1970, the X-Men's one-and-only book was cancelled.

I know, right? What's more shocking to a modern reader: that the X-Men only had one title or that it was actually cancelled for five years? Bit of a mind-blower, but it's true.

This collection pulls together the last third of the original X-Men's run and, on reading it, you might understand why the book was cancelled; it's a pretty mixed bag. Some of the stories are downright terrible... but some of them are pure gold.

Don't forget that it was this run that introduced the world to the fantastic artwork of Neal Adams! You remember Neal Adams, right? He's the artist that took the pop-art approach of the '60s comicbook artists and gave it a huge kick up the arse to new levels of realism. Pretty much every superhero artist in the '70s and '80s were basing their stuff on Neal Adams' work; he's that influential. (There are a few exceptions; mainly the '60s guys who were still working and John Buscema... but Buscema's a comicbook god for another review.)

It's in this volume that the X-Men take on new members who weren't founders for the first time (not including Mimic, who was not so much a true member as a plot device). In case you're wondering, the X-Men line-up during this run was Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Havok, Iceman, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Polaris and Professor X.

A lot of this stuff is goofy as Hell, but what do you expect from late 1960s Marvel? Personally, I get a huge kick out of this stuff, but I realise it's not to the tastes of most modern comicbook readers, so YMMV.

TO ME, MY X-MEN!
